Ficou conhecida pelos seus desempenhos como Emma Peel, na série The Avengers, como Teresa di Vicenzo, esposa de James Bond no filme On Her Majesty's Secret Service, e mais recentemente Lady Olenna Tyrell na série Game of Thrones da HBO.[1][2][3] Foi agraciada com o Emmy de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante em Minissérie ou Telefilme em 1997, interpretando Mrs. Danvers em Rebecca.[4]

No teatro, ganhou o Tony de Melhor Atriz Principal em Peça em 1994 pela atuação em Medea.[5]

Morreu em 10 de setembro de 2020, aos 82 anos, devido a um câncer.[6]
