Enoch Powell
John Enoch Powell, MBE, (16 de junho de 1912 - 8 de fevereiro de 1998) foi um político britânico, erudito clássico, autor, linguista, soldado, filólogo e poeta. Ele serviu como um membro conservador do Parlamento (1950-1974) e foi Ministro da Saúde (1960-1963) e, em seguida, Partido Unionista do Ulster (UUP) Membro do Parlamento (1974-1987).

Carreira editar
Antes de entrar na política, Powell era um estudioso clássico. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, ele serviu em cargos de estado-maior e de inteligência, chegando ao posto de brigadeiro. Ele também escreveu poesia e muitos livros sobre temas clássicos e políticos.
Powell atraiu ampla atenção por seu discurso "Rios de Sangue", proferido em 20 de abril de 1968 na Assembleia Geral do Centro Político Conservador da Área de West Midlands. Nele, Powell criticou as taxas de imigração para o Reino Unido, especialmente da New Commonwealth, e se opôs à legislação antidiscriminação Race Relations Bill. O discurso atraiu fortes críticas dos próprios membros do partido de Powell e da imprensa.[1][2]
No rescaldo do discurso, várias pesquisas sugeriram que 67 a 82 por cento da população do Reino Unido concordava com as opiniões de Powell.[3][4][5] Seus partidários alegaram que o grande público seguinte que Powell atraiu ajudou os conservadores a vencer as eleições gerais de 1970,[6][7][8] e talvez lhes tenha custado as eleições gerais de fevereiro de 1974,[9] quando Powell deu as costas aos conservadores endossando um voto a favor dos trabalhistas, que voltou como um governo minoritário. Powell foi devolvido à Câmara dos Comuns em outubro de 1974 como o deputado do Partido Unionista do Ulster para o distrito eleitoral de South Down na Irlanda do Norte. Ele representou o distrito eleitoral até ser derrotado nas eleições gerais de 1987.

So far as these can tell us anything, the opinion polls following the speech provide an indication of the scale of popular support. Gallup recorded 74 per cent, ORC 82 per cent, NOP 67 per cent, and the Express 79 per cent in favour of what Powell had proposed in Birmingham.
