Nosy-Be is a few miles west of Madagascar, andis very varied in appearance, some of the mountainsbeing rocky and barren, while others are coveredwith dense veo-etation. It is considered a morehealthy spot than Mayotta, and there is also agreater rainfall. We were taken ashore to the littletown of Hellville by a French official who had comeon board to fetch his letters. He replaces theGovernor, as the latter now lives at Diego Suarez,on the east coast of Madagascar. After landingon a fine stone pier, we walked up a slight inclineshaded by lovely mango-trees to Government House,where our companion introduced us to his family.They all seemed perfectly well and happy in theirw^ell-built and beautifully kept home; in fact hetold us he had requested his Government to leavehim as long as possible on that station. Looking onto it are the French Government buildings andmission-schools, each with its own little garden fullof bread-fruit trees, and that acacia with brightscarlet flowers that the French call flamboyant. We walked on for about a mile, until we reacheda Malagasy village, the best-built native village Ihad yet seen, all the huts being constructed ofbamboo, raised on piles about three feet high, androofed with palm-leaves. It was inhabited bybright and healthy-looking people, w^ho w^ere par-ticularly civil to the strangers.
