A região de cinco [[Estado-nação|estados-nação]] e [[Conselho Nórdico|três regiões autônomas]] compartilham uma história em comum, bem como afinidades culturais e sociais em suas respectivas sociedades, com reflexo nos sistemas políticos e no [[modelo nórdico]].<ref name=paisesnordicos1/> Politicamente, os países nórdicos não formam uma entidade separada, mas cooperam no âmbito do [[Conselho Nórdico]] e, em menor grau, da [[União Europeia]]. Linguisticamente, a área é dominada pelas [[línguas nórdicas]] - o [[Língua dinamarquesa|dinamarquês]], o [[Língua sueca|sueco]], o [[Língua norueguesa|norueguês]], o [[Língua feroesa|feroês]] e o [[Língua islandesa|islandês]] - e pelo [[Língua finlandesa|finlandês]], e minoritariamente pelas [[línguas lapônicas]]. Os países nórdicos têm uma população combinada de cerca de 25 milhões de pessoas espalhadas por uma área de terra de 3,5 milhões de km² (a Groenlândia corresponde por 60% da área total).
