Israel Gelfand

Israïl Moiseevich Gelfand (em russo: Израиль Моисеевич Гельфанд, em iídiche: ישראל געלפֿאַנד, também escrito Gel'fand; Okny, 2 de setembro de 1913 — New Brunswick, 5 de outubro de 2009) foi um matemático ucraniano de origem judaica. Contribuiu de modo substancial em diferentes ramos da matemática, entre eles a teoria de grupos, teoria da representação, álgebra linear e teoria da álgebra de Banach. Gelfand ensinou durante muitos anos na Universidade Estatal de Moscovo, na União Soviética (onde estudava com Andrei Kolmogorov) e, depois de emigrar, na Universidade de Rutgers, nos Estados Unidos.
