Quando na Universidade de Viena, Hayek se dedica à observação de células neurais, e desenvolve um pequeno rascunho desse trabalho. Mais tarde, depois de revisões e ampliações, o livro '''''The Sensory Order: An Inquiry into The Foundations of Theoretical Psychology''''' (1952), viria a ser publicado. Nele, Hayek argumenta sobre a tese que viria a se chamar "conexionismo", em que a mente é vista como um sistema adaptativo. Segundo Pinker, essa tese antecipou vários trabalhos posteriores em teoria da mente e psicologia.<ref>{{Citar web|url=http://archive.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2004/01/11/friedrich_the_great/|titulo=Friedrich the Great|data=11 de janeiro de 2014|acessodata=20 de julho de 2016|obra=|publicado=|ultimo=Postrel|primeiro=Virginia|citacao="Hayek posited spontaneous order in the brain arising out of distributed networks of simple units (neurons) exchanging local signals," says Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker.
