On one of their trips the Pilgrims found25 AMERICAN HISTORY FOR LITTLE FOLKS a Kttle tree bent to the ground, with someacorns scattered about. Look out there, men, cried CaptainStandish; it may be a deer trap whichthe Indians have set. ^^ Let me take a look at it and see whatI can find, said William Bradford, whodid not watch where he was stepping. All of a sudden the trap sprung. Thedignified man was caught by the foot, andfound himself jerked up in the air. Wemay be sure that this made even the soberPilgrims laugh. The first harvest at Plymouth was good. When the crops were gathered in, thePilgrims had a thne of thanksgiving. Tothis feast the ladian chief Massasoit andninety of his braves were invited. Theycame dressed in deerskins, feathers, andfoxtails. Their faces were daubed withred, yellow, and white paint. Pound hisneck Massasoit wore a bag of tobacco anda string of beads. 26
