William Kennoch collection of U.S. Secret Service photographs

Notes

I found a portrait of my great-grandfather Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921). I found that the Library of Congress has an image labeled "Charles Lindauer" by putting "Lindauer" in the search bar. Charles Lindauer is a relatively rare name, on closer inspection I saw that the image came from the "William Kennoch collection of United States Secret Service photographs". Only Charles Lindauer (1842-1921) would have been a person of interest to the Secret Service. Their task prior to presidential protection was arresting counterfeiters. He was arrested for counterfeiting in 1871 and was pardoned by President Grant in 1873. The Jersey Journal on April 12, 1873 had the following: "Charles Lindauer, who has been confined in the Essex County Jail for nearly two years, sentenced for passing counterfeit money, was on Tuesday the 1st, pardoned by the President on account of his turning State's evidence. Lindauer was bequeathed $15,000 last month by a deceased uncle." He had no uncle that died, he was laundering money from his criminal enterprises. He and his two brothers ran the numbers game in the Chinatown area of Manhattan. He was described as a "small fry" in the numbers game racket during the Lexow Committee hearings in 1895. By the time of the hearings he had already retired and moved to Rye, New York.

Notes

William Kennoch collection: Collection consists of portrait photographs acquired by Secret Service agent William Kennoch of counterfeiters, criminals and other wanted men and women accused of federal crimes.
