English: Artist's Impression of the Pluto-Charon system. Observing a very rare occultation of a star by Pluto's satellite Charon from three different sites, including Paranal, home of the VLT, astronomers were able to determine with great accuracy the radius and density of the satellite to the farthest planet. The density, 1.71 that of water, is indicative of an icy body with about slightly more than half of rocks. The observations also put strong constraints on the existence of an atmosphere around Charon.

Gracias a la observación de una muy rara ocultación estelar protagonizada por Caronte, el satélite de Plutón, desde tres sitios distintos, incluyendo Paranal, hogar del VLT, los astrónomos fueron capaces de determinar con gran exactitud el radio y densidad de este satélite que orbita al planeta más lejano. La densidad, 1,71 veces la del agua, indica que se está en presencia de un cuerpo congelado, el que está conformado por más de un 50 por ciento de rocas. Las observaciones también han generado gran reticencia con respecto a la existencia de una atmósfera alrededor de Caronte.
