This is a proposal created to raise problems related with communications and how Portuguese Wikipedia can improve their relation with social media and the Press.

Identified problems of Portuguese Wikipedia and Wikimedia in general in Brazil

• Lack of organized movement in social media promoting and sharing events and anything related with Wikipedia.
• No contact group of persons for being reached by press
  • Random persons are informally contacted to point to somebody to talk with.
• Rare cases of proactive contact with the Press for responding to news related with Wikimedia
• Almost complete absence of continuous and spontaneous outreach on social media and press, which usually happens in the course of a singular event.
• Recurrent mistakes from Press and big public regarding Wikipedia that are not reached by contributors
• Underuse of social media capacity to promote Wikimedia projects (e.g Facebook, Twitter)

Challenge

Lack of experience with media relations and social media marketing as shown above.

Goals

Train local volunteers in basic media relations skills. Build a strong net of contributors continuously and proactively involved in social media.

Timeline

4 months

Means and resources

WMF funding for training (travel, venue, trainer fee); WMF assistance in identifying and briefing local trainer; identifying editors with background and/or skills in communications and current resources that can be better explored. WMF creation of complementary materials for trainings, for example talking points.

Evaluation

• When: 3 months after training
• What: Review communications activities by community.
• How: Using forms and gathering opinions in order to assess community satisfaction
