As Gimnospermas já foram tidas como um grupo natural, no entanto algumas descobertas [[fóssil|fósseis]] sugerem que elas são associações fungicais secundárias, de modo que elas não representam somente um indivíduo.

As coníferas são o grupo de gimnospérmicas mais numeroso e de maior distribuição actual.

O grupo das Gimnospermas é composto por plantas que têm sementes mas não produzem frutos. O nome Gimnosperma tem duas partes que vem do grego : gimnos = nu e sperma = semente. Por isso é o Grupo das “sementes nuas”, sem o fruto que as protege. Nessa divisão encontramos plantas terrestres e adaptadas ao clima temperado e frio.
 
As gimnospermas não produzem frutos, mas possuem flores, que seriam seus órgãos reprodutores. São organizadas morfologicamente em raiz, caule e folhas. As sementes são formadas em estruturas denominadas estróbilo, são nuas (sem fruto).
 
As plantas com sementes são geralmente divididas em uma única classe, conhecidas como Spermatophyta, que está ainda subdividida em angiospermas e gimnospermas.
 
A palavra gimnosperma é derivada da palavra grega gymnospermos, que significa “semente nua”. Angiospermas e gimnospermas são plantas com sementes. Embora, as diferenças são mais distintas, os pontos a seguir mencionados são algumas das semelhanças entre eles.
 
* Eles são capazes de produzir pólen para a fecundação e sua fecundação é siphonogamous, através de um tubo polínico. Gimnospermas dependem principalmente da polinização pelo vento e algumas angiospermas também são dependentes do mesmo agente.
