Hernâni Edgar Canavarro Magalhães


Linked to the wine labour since childhood, soon awakes to a passion for the wine culture.

Looking for an higher education that will allow him to get the scientific knowledge to develop a solid career in Viticulture and Winemaking, he has a Degree in Oenology in the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.

Combining a strong curiosity, with the practicality and commercial view, the final degree thesis, a study on the behavior and suitability of wine grape varieties Castelão, Aragonez (Tinta Roriz) and Tinta Miúda, anticipates the value of Portuguese indigenous grape varieties in the international market.

Beginning his career in the "Bucelas" region, in one of the largest wine business groups in Portugal, becomes a supporter of the "Arinto" variety, with results that would allow the confirmation of the region as a producer of excellent wines.

It is recognized as one of the Top Ten Winemakers in 2011 by the Wine Masters Challenge - World Wine Contest.

Betting on the originality of the terroir of each Portuguese region as an commercial asset, he produces wines with strong personality, combining and implementing new winemaking techniques (micro-oxygenation) with an respect for traditional knowledge (oak barrel aging, Pisa-a-pé).

Taking advantage of the proximity to the Institute of Agronomy, several students are guided to make the final degree thesis .

Extends its area of ​​expertise to the region of "Lisboa", "Tejo" and "Alentejo", working with large cooperatives, as well as giving advice to wineries with small / medium productions.​

He collaborates with several newspapers and general magazines as a wine expert.

The knowledge and skills for the critical judgment of the wine, resulted in the invitation to be part of the Jury of the V, VI and XIV of the Wine Masters Challenge-World Wine Contest.

He is responsible for the Oenology of Quinta Vale de Fornos, Casa José Repolho ("José Repolho - Distinctive Wines Ltd."),and has collaborate with Adega Cooperativa da Vermelha, Sociedade de Vinhos de Serpa, Caves Velhas and Adegas Camillo Alves.

The wines are recognized in the major national (Associação de Sommeliers de Portugal, Concurso Internacional de Vinhos "Cidade do Porto") and international competitions (International Wine Challenge, International Wine and Spirit Competition, Premium Select Wine Challenge , Wine Masters Challenge, World Wine Contest, Challenge du Vin).
