A temporada da NHL de 1992–93 foi a 76.ª temporada da National Hockey League (NHL). A liga teve uma expansão para 26 equipes com a entrada de Mighty Ducks of Anaheim e Florida Panthers. O New York Rangers foi o campeão da Copa Stanley. Foi a quarta conquista da equipe, a primeira em 54 temportadas, desde 1939–40.

A performance espetacular de Dominik Hasek do Buffalo Sabres inaugurou uma nova era de dominância dos goleiros na NHL. Apenas três equipes atingiram a marca de 300 gols, e apenas um, o Detroit Red Wings, teve média de mais de quatro gols por partida. Os goleiros conseguiram 99 partidas sem serem vazados durante a temporada regular, uma marca que quebrou a marca de 85 jogos de 1974–75.

Negócios da Liga

Para esta temporada, os nomes das conferências foram alterados de Campbell e Wales para Oeste e Leste respectivamente, e as divisões foram renomeadas de Adams, Patrick, Norris, e Smythe para Nordeste, Atlântico, Central, e Pacífico respectivamente. Cada divisão teve mudanças. A Divisão Nordeste recebeu o Pittsburgh Penguins, anteriormente na Divisão Patrick. A Divisão do Atlântico ficou com o estreante Florida Panthers e o Tampa Bay Lightning, que estava na Divisão Norris. A Divisão Central recebeu o Winnipeg Jets da Divisão Smythe. A Divisão do Pacífico teve a adição do Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Os vencedores das divisões foram classificados em primeiro e segundo pela ordem de pontos, enquanto os seis classificados remanescentes na conferência foram ordenados de terceiro a oitavo. Todavia, diferentemente da NBA, a NHL colocou as equipes de maior pontuação contra os de menor pontuação na segunda fase.Para reduzir o número de viagens para a Costa Oeste, quando uma equipe da Divisão Central enfrentou uma do Pacífico nos play-offs, o formato foi de 2–3–2, em vez do tradicional 2–2–1–1–1, o que ocorreu apenas nesta temporada.

Mudanças de franquias

• O Mighty Ducks of Anaheim e o Florida Panthers estrearam nesta temporada.
• O Minnesota North Stars foi realocado para Dallas, Texas, para virar o Dallas Stars. Foi a primeira realocação de franquia na NHL desde que o Colorado Rockies se tornou o New Jersey Devils em 1982–83.
• Esta foi a primeira temporada em que o San Jose Sharks realmente jogou em San José, indo para o a nova San Jose Arena depois de jogar nos dois primeiros anos no Cow Palace em Daly City.
• Foi a última temporada em que o Saint Louis Blues jogou na Saint Louis Arena e que o Chicago Blackhawks mandou suas partidas no Chicago Stadium.

Temporada regular

Os Panters e os Mighty Ducks estabeleceram novas marcas para equipes estreantes. Ambos terminaram com 33 vitórias, passando os 31 triunfos do Philadelphia Flyers e do Los Angeles Kings em 1967–68. Essa marca se manteria até a trigésima quarta vitória do Vegas Golden Knights em sua temporada inaugural em 1 de fevereiro de 2018, terminando com 51 vitórias. Os Panters também estabeleceram um recorde de 83 pontos, passando o recorde de 73 pontos dos Flyers em 1968. Neutral site games As a part of the 1992 strike settlement, the NHL and Bruce McNall's Multivision Marketing and Public Relations Co. organized 26 regular season games in cities without a franchise as a litmus test for future expansion. The Stars played a neutral-site game in their previous market of Minnesota at the Target Center in Minneapolis, where they were greeted enthusiastically. The Minnesota North Stars' tradition of playing on New Year's Eve and holding a post-game skate on the ice was also continued with a game between the Flyers and Bruins. The Lightning vs. Red Wings contest in Minneapolis was scheduled for Martin Luther King Day, a Monday, necessitating an afternoon face-off at 2:05 PM. However, due to an error on the NHL's part, the Lightning believed themselves to be playing at 7:35 PM, an error that was only discovered two weeks prior to the game by reporters. The Lightning ended up playing an 8:05 PM game in Winnipeg, flying back to the U.S., and playing again 18 hours later in Minneapolis. The Panthers, in the midst of a playoff race, played a March "home" game against the Maple Leafs 30 miles from Toronto, at Hamilton.
